Aspiring architects in the United States understand the importance of registering with reputable organizations if they want to achieve success. The American Institute of Architects is a nonprofit organization that offers education, community development, public outreach, and government advocacy. And all these services are aimed at supporting architecture as a profession and raise more awareness about it.
The institute was formed in 1857 by 13 individual architects. The institution is run by a board of governors. Also, there are over 300 local and state constituents who work to provide members with focus that reflects the architecture profession. As a collective group, it can participate in and influence decisions made by local, state, as well as federal heads in regards to architecture.
There are several levels of membership in the AIA, with the highest level known as Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA). There is no national membership for students, but they can become members through the American Institute of Architecture Students, where there are also several chapters and categories to join.
AIA Honors and Awards
For several years now the AIA has been honoring organizations and individuals who perform exceedingly in support of architecture as a profession. Some of their honors include the AIA Gold Medal, which is awarded to those who bring a positive and long-lasting influence in the world of architecture. There is also the Architecture Firm Award and is the highest honor given to firms that consistently produce notable architectural pieces.
AIA Partnership with ConstructConnect
Earlier in the year, AIA announced that it has strengthened and extended its partnership with ConstructConnect to be their innovation partner. Together, the two organizations will focus on strategic initiatives such as research strategies to further educate architects. They will also strive to expand the outreach and support for AIA chapter, as well as examine new opportunities in architecture.
