Eric Lefkofsky’s Tempus to Incorporate Three New Genetic Biomarkers in Its Lung Cancer Treatment Study

Lung cancer is caused by both environmental and genetic risk factors with tobacco smoking being one of the most common environmental risk factors associated with the disease. Recently, a team at Dartmouth conducted a study revealing that gene-smoking interactions pose a significant role in the etiology of lung cancer. In their research, three novel Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) or variants in our DNA know to increase the chance of developing the illness were isolated in the interaction analysis, where two of the SNPs were for non-small cell lung cancer risk and the other one for squamous cell lung cancer risk. All the results of the study titled “Genome-wide interaction study of smoking behavior and non-small cell lung cancer risk in the Caucasian population,” were published in Carcinogenesis.

So far, the Dartmouth study is one of the most prominent genome-wide SNP-smoking interaction analyses ever done for lung cancer. During the research, the scientists incorporated two-step criteria in the reduction of power loss from regular gene-environment interaction analysis. The team identified the three SNPs that are essential biomarkers and can be used by oncologists to enhance the precision for which they can classify a person’s risk of lung cancer by smoking. As a result, oncologists can, therefore, create individualized prognosis and treatment plan. Although, the Dartmouth Study was solely based on the Caucasian race and results may not apply to other ethnicities given the differences in genetic background, the researchers are planning on doing further tests for other communities soon.

George Soros Thinks Capitalism can Endanger the Purity of Democracy

George Soros, a well-known philanthropist and billionaire investor, thinks that democracy can be threatened by capitalism. Though he is a beneficiary of financial markets, considering his investment success in financial markets, Soros believes that the uncontrolled entry of market values into the human life and society is creating a significant threat to the values of democracy. He further stated that open society is no longer experiencing a threat from communism, but it is from capitalism. Soros confirms that when the open society concept was introduced in the 1930s, it considered both Nazism and communism as the biggest threat to the concept due to its totalitarian ideological base – focusing on state control over people and behaving as if they possess the ultimate truth.

Post World War 2 and after the collapse of communism in the 90s, Soros thought that the communities could work towards a global open society concept and many of the Open Society Foundations in the East started working towards that goal. However, he says that the foundations in the West did not reciprocate the same feeling. Therefore, he began thinking about the concept to make it address the current needs of the society. During his re-examine, Soros identified that open societies more prevalent in the current world to lead to political action explained by Karl Popper – the intellectual who coined the term of open society – in his book.

Soros extended the concept of open societies and explained that excessive individualism could also tamper the idea of open society. Extreme market competition creates less cooperation and reflects instability and considerable inequalities. Soros thinks that laissez-faire capitalism that projects the magic of marketplace has all the possibilities of a breakdown, unless if it is working towards a common goal. Soros further acknowledges that he would not put laissez-faire capitalism to the buckets of communism or Nazism. While totalitarian concepts directly oppose the open societies, the laissez-faire policies inadvertently do it.

Soros is a Hungarian-born American investor. He was born in 1930 and migrated to the U.K. after the Second World War. Soros completed his graduation from the London School of Economics and migrated to the U.S. in the year 1956. He started investing in the Wall Street as a stock broker and founded his hedge fund management firm named Soros Fund Management in 1970. In the later years, Soros utilized the opportunities of currency market trading to earn larger profits, and the company grew significantly.George Soros has contributed more than $12 billion, as of today, to various organizations working for transparency, promoting societies with equality and justice, accountable government, and freedom of expression. Since the early 80s, he started founding Open Society Foundations across the globe with missions of political correctness and inclusiveness of all the voice. Currently, his Open Society Foundations have operations in more than 70 countries.

Jose AuriemoNeto sees opportunities that no one else can

As recently as 20 years ago, many of Brazil’s largest cities were viewed as extremely troubled areas. This perception of the major cities of the country as being overrun by crime, poverty and violence often times gave investors a lukewarm outlook, as far as investing in these places went. But this has begun to change over the last 20 years. Many of Brazil’s largest cities have become hot destinations for the rich, famous and powerful. With its idyllic settings and endless beaches, Brazil offers one of the most enticing destinations anywhere on the planet. Real estate investors have begun realizing that this enticement extends to them as well.

As CEO of one of Brazil’s most prominent real estate development firms, JHSF Participacaoes, Jose AuriemoNeto has long been one of the visionaries who has set off the rush to invest in this country that holds so much promise. He has undertaken some of the largest real estate development projects in the history of Brazil, constructing everything from airports to high-rise luxury condominiums to some of the largest shopping centers ever built in the country. This has set his firm apart from all others, garnering much respect and appreciation from the people of Brazil, who recognize the crucial contributions that JHSF Participacaoes has made to the development of their country.

One of the largest projects that Jose AuriemoNeto has ever decided to build is the sprawling mixed-use project known as ParqueCidadeJardim. Located astride one of the most heavily trafficked highways in the country, Jose AuriemoNeto had the vision to see the potential in the 100 + acre lot that at one time stood vacant. Seeing a need for more high-end, luxury condominiums and office space in the downtown Sao Paulo area, AuriemoNeto raised the funding to get the project off its feet. Working with some of the best architects in the country, he brought to fruition a luxury development with more than a million square feet of habitable space.

Today, ParqueCidadeJardim stands as a reminder of all the Brazil has to offer. Its image as a third-world country is quickly dissipating.
